I’m in the US at the moment, and many merchants use numeric location identities in the merchant name location (MC Data Element 43). e.g „MCDONALDS #456 PHOENIX AZ“.
On Android notifications and in the app, the ‚#‘ (hash) is appearing as a ‚£‘ (pound sign).
